Sifakas of Ranohira

Perched high in the canopy of Ranohira park, two Verreaux's sifakas (Propithecus verreauxi) enjoy a quiet moment in the sun. Recognizable by their silky white fur and brown "cap" of hair on the head, these iconic Madagascar lemurs move from tree to tree in spectacular leaps, propelled by their powerful hind legs.

Often seen in small family groups, sifakas spend much of the day feeding on leaves, flowers, and bark, as shown by the one on the left, busy nibbling on a young shoot. Their expressive golden gaze makes them one of the most memorable encounters for park visitors.

An endemic and now threatened species, the sifaka embodies both the richness and the fragility of Madagascar's biodiversity.
