How to Get to Western Madagascar
By Air: The fastest way is to fly from Antananarivo to Morondava.
By Road: A 4x4 is required for long road trips due to rough terrain, especially during the
rainy
season. The drive
from Antananarivo to Morondava takes about 12–14 hours.
By Boat: Some destinations, like Belo-sur-Mer, can be reached by boat from Morondava.
1. Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Tsingy de Bemaraha is famous for its dramatic
limestone formations, also known as
"Tsingy," which means "where one cannot walk barefoot" in Malagasy. The park is home to
a rich ecosystem, including
lemurs, rare birds, and unique flora. Adventurous travelers can explore the park through
suspended bridges, caves, and
hiking trails.
2. Avenue of the Baobabs
One of the most photographed locations in Madagascar, the Avenue of the Baobabs is a
stunning natural boulevard lined
with towering Grandidier’s baobabs. The best time to visit is during sunrise or sunset
when the trees cast dramatic
shadows on the ground, creating a magical atmosphere.
3. Morondava
A lively coastal town and the gateway to many western attractions, Morondava is known
for its relaxing beaches, vibrant
local markets, and fresh seafood. From here, travelers can organize trips to the Avenue
of the Baobabs and Tsingy de
Bemaraha.
4. Kirindy Forest
A dry deciduous forest located near Morondava, Kirindy Forest is home to the elusive
fosa, Madagascar’s top predator,
along with several species of lemurs, chameleons, and birds. A night walk in Kirindy
offers a chance to see many
nocturnal animals.
5. Belo-sur-Mer
A charming fishing village south of Morondava, Belo-sur-Mer is known for its
crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches,
and traditional boat-building craftsmanship. It is a great spot for relaxation and
